RHIS Basic Concepts and Practices
Capacity building workshop
The foundation of good decision-making in health is based on an efficient and reliable health
information system (HIS). Health information systems are essential for planning and implementation
of health programs, good governance, healthcare service delivery, monitoring and evaluation of
programs, etc. The agenda of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has brought into focus the need
for all countries to generate sufficient good-quality routine health data to inform national and
international-level planning and management. SEAR countries are at different stages of
strengthening their HIS, with varying capacities to analyze and use their data for various
interventions and priorities.
In an attempt to address this gap, WHO developed the SCORE for Health Data Technical Package,
which facilitates the understanding of the countries’ HIS needs. The SCORE assessment highlights the gap in HIS
capacities across SEAR countries and the need for strengthening these.
The USAID-funded MEASURE Evaluation project, WHO, AEDES, the University of Oslo, INSP in Mexico, the University of Queensland, Australia, and the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) joined hands to develop, test and harmonize the RHIS curriculum under the Health Data Collaborative. This curriculum aims to help the trainees to conceptualize, design, develop, govern, and manage a routine HIS. The purpose is to use the system-generated information to improve public health practice and service delivery, and thus address the challenge of HIS strengthening. Since 2016, a number of RHIS workshops have been conducted for capacity building of SEAR countries.

Regional Office for South-East Asia, WHO and PHFI is happy to announce its next workshop on RHIS
basic concepts and practices. Given the COVID-19 situation, this workshop would be conducted
online and the contents as well as delivery would be adapted to eLearning requirements.
The workshop will commence on 12 the March 2021. Sessions would be conducted twice a week, each
session lasting for 2-3 hours. A detailed agenda with the dates, timings and topics is enclosed for
your reference.
